Work

I build software systems and lead engineering teams.

My work includes payment processing, fraud and sanctions checks, and moving established systems to AWS. I'm involved in the design and code, as well as helping teams plan and deliver the work.

Selected work

Payment controls

I designed frameworks and an application that applies controls to cash transfers across Goldman Sachs. A typical transaction is evaluated against about fifty controls, selected according to the transaction type, source, and business requirements.

AWS Migrations

I've led work to move payment applications from on-premises infrastructure to AWS, leveraging CDK and replacing parts of existing systems in stages. That has included database migrations and changes to how applications process messages, handle failures, and prevent duplicate processing.

Operational Resilience

My work has included regional failover, deployments without downtime, and tools that help operations teams understand what's happening to individual transactions. Earlier treasury work included building failover processes and procedures to mitigate risks for events such as Superstorm Sandy.

Media technology at HBO

Before moving into finance, I spent a decade at HBO building rights management, publishing, and other business systems. I took over and delivered a rewrite of the satellite scrambling and affiliate authorization system after earlier attempts had failed.

Tools and platforms

I work primarily in Java, Python and TypeScript, with experience in other languages including C# and Terraform. My background includes Unix systems, relational and NoSQL databases, messaging platforms, and AWS.

Leading teams

I lead engineers across regions, review designs and code, and help turn broad requirements into manageable pieces of work. Recruiting and mentoring are also regular parts of my role.
